Since I have closed the blog, chadavalaniundi which was a part of it has remained inconspicuous. Many students have benefitted through the chadavalaniundi blog for the past three years. I am associated with an NGO, Dr Reddy’s Foundation and many students have been approaching for help thinking the blog is closed. Since I’m with Cinegoer now, I have requested the employers here to support the programme by putting the link here. I am seeking the support of all my blog visitors once again to continue their charity and support the underprivileged child to complete their studies in their own little way. I want to thank all those are funding the students despite me closing the blog. …sunita chowdhary (chadavalaniundi@gmail.com and www.chadavalaniundi.com)

Help Nagamallika Study

February 3, 2009 by Sunita · 1 Comment

Nagamallika has scored over 80% in X class examinations. She is currently pursuing her Vocational Intermediate at the Kallam Anji Reddy Vidyalaya, Chandanagar. She is pursuing computer sciences. However, Nagamallika’s educational career had lots of breaks and false stops. Her family’s poverty is threatening to stall her education again.

A resident of Jagadgirigutta, she studied till class V in Telugu medium. She was double promoted in class V and was later enrolled in St. Thomas English medium school, Jagadgirigutta. She passed her VII examination and gave up school for two years. Her family’s inability to fund her education was the chief reason for her wasting two academic years.

YUVA volunteers rescued her and enrolled her at the YUVA center located in Jagadgirigutta. The staff at the YUVA center, helped her study and she passed X examinations with over 80%. The YUVA staff helped her enroll for vocational Intermediate course at Kallam Anji Reddy Vocational College, which is an initiative of DR. Reddy Foundation. She is studying computer science and her lecturers are very impressed with her commitment.

The two year course costs Nagamallika’s family 4,500 rupees every year. Add to the course fee, the amount required for travelling, books etc., it has become difficult for her family to educate her. Nagamallika’s father is jobless and hardly bothers about her education. Nagamallika’s mother works as a volunteer at DR. Reddys Foundation and draws a pitiful honorarium. Nagamallika’s family survives on the pension of her grandmother.

Nagamallika is under stress to quit studies. Given the financial stress, her family is under; she might soon take up employment. However, Nagamallika can remain in college and study, if some of us can help. We can help her by providing for her transport, books, course fee etc. We would be very grateful, if you can sponsor Nagamallika, as small donations from you go a long way in helping Nagamallika finish her course. chadavalaniundi@gmail.com (all cheques will be addressed to the college/school)

Sireesha shouldn’t quit

There is hardly any family to care for her. But for the efforts of a few kindhearted souls, she would have quit her studies sometime ago. Though mired in poverty, she has managed to score over 85% in Xth standard. Enrolled at the SUVR & SR Government Polytechnic College for Women, Ethamukkala village, Kothapatnam mandal, Prakasam district; she is currently pursuing her first year of polytechnic in computer and commercial practice.

Born on 09- May- 1993 to Late Mr. T. Guru Mohan Rao and Late Ms. T. Koteswaramma, Talluri Sai Sireesha hails from Vishwanadhapuram village situated in Lingasamudram village of Prakasam district. Orphaned as a toddler, Sireesha was being brought up by her maternal grandmothers and her uncles, and was later forsaken by her uncles under mysterious circumstances. Teachers of the government school, where she was enrolled supported her education all through and she has done very well in her school. Her teachers are very proud of her achievements and have admitted her in a polytechnic college.

Government teachers are transferred regularly; hence Sireesha’s teachers are unable to support her. While Sireesha resides in the college hostel, Sireesha has admitted her grandmother in an old-age home located near her college. This has led to a bigger economic crisis and Sireesha for the lack of sponsors is on the verge of quitting her studies. At this juncture, Sireesha is in dire need of patrons.

Patrons can go a long way in helping Sireesha out of her problems. If you can help her financially, please support her.mail: chadavalaniundi@gmail.com

Support Yuva

The YUVA: Youth Learning Centres provide formal school-based learning opportunities for young people disadvantaged by a lack of access to schooling and quality education. Located in urban slums, the Centres offer bridge courses to prepare school dropouts and working adolescents for the SSC board examination, which is an important springboard for higher education and better career opportunities.

BACKGROUND

DRF is a Hyderabad-based NGO dedicated to bettering the lives of marginalized communities by providing them with the skills and tools to access quality education and livelihood opportunities. Within the School-Community Partnership in Education (SCOPE) program, DRF focuses on integrating out-of-school children into mainstream education systems - a key issue, as the dropout rate among adolescents in the urban slums of Hyderabad is alarmingly high. This high dropout rate is fueled by a lack of access to schooling and quality education primarily as a result of parental and government apathy towards education, financial circumstances, a perception that the regular school system does not provide skills relevant for the job market, frequent migration and discrimination against the girl child.

Once out of school, children enter the world of work and leave behind some of the most formative years of their lives. Due to a lack of education and suitable job skills many of these young people either never work or pick up unskilled jobs that give them neither enough money nor a sense of satisfaction. Many young girls become domestic help. Some end up getting married before they reach the legal age for marriage. Faced with deprivation and poverty, many become victims of human trafficking. The situation is not much better for young boys who become part of the large unorganized labor force and easy targets for exploitation.

DRF INTERVENTION

Recognizing the need to bring these young people out of a cycle of deprivation and exploitation, DRF provides bridge courses to prepare school dropouts and working adolescents for the SSC board examination, which is an important springboard for higher education and better career opportunities.

As children who attend Yuva Centres have never been to school or have been out of school for a significant amount of time, a curriculum and pedagogy based on that of regular formal schools would be faulty. As such, Yuva training begins with a comprehensive review of basic literacy and numeracy skills before progressing to more complex concepts.

While many children are in need of remedial and bridge courses, no specific teaching and learning material exists for these students, nor are teachers trained to address the learning needs of remedial and bridge course students. As such, DRF is designing original material and professional development programs for the Yuva program.

In order to develop appropriate teaching and learning material, DRF identifies critical issues in textbooks and state exams to highlight within the Yuva curriculum. The material is presented in simple, clear language so that children are able to go beyond memorization to comprehension.

REQUEST FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT

DRF requests your support to develop remedial teaching and learning material for Yuva Centres and provide Yuva teachers with the necessary training to use these materials most effectively. Currently, Yuva Centers serve 500 students. The cost of developing remedial material for these students is Rs.250/student ($5/child), including providing each child with his/her own copy of the material.

Santosh Kumar 15 is in the 9Th standard in a school.. telugu medium in Kalwakurthy. He has a younger brother Ganesh who is in the 5th standard. They belong to Kotra Thanda in mehboobnagar district. Their father died four years back, he got drunk and after a fight with his wife, hung himself. The mother works as a construction labourer and shuttles between Mehboobnagar and Hyderabad whenever there is work. Santosh would cook for himself and his brother when his mother would go to hyderabad in search of work. Last week, Santosh’s mother consumed illicit liquor and died. Ganesh and Santosh have relatives but they all have their own families in hyderabad struggling to exist in huts and single bedroom homes. Ganesh, is yet to cope with the trauma of losing his mother, he is suffering from fever and wakes up suddenly in the nights ever since his mother expired.

In three months, these kids will complete their academic year in kalwakurthy. We need to shift these children to the hostel and see that they are comfortable.
